At UCIMED, students and visiting researchers can engage in a robust portfolio of biomedical research and clinical trials supported by advanced laboratories, a state-of-the-art Clinical Simulation Center, and the university’s affiliated Institute for Medical Sciences Research (IICIMED). Participants have the opportunity to collaborate on observational, epidemiological, and interventional studies, including Phase I–IV clinical trials in pharmaceuticals, vaccines, and medical devices, as well as projects in oncology, infectious diseases, primary care, and public health. Interinstitutional teams can also contribute to translational and applied research in areas such as molecular biology, biotechnology, pharmacology, and bioengineering through UCIMED’s specialized laboratories and research units. With strong ethical oversight, international partnerships, and a focus on real-world evidence generation, UCIMED provides a dynamic platform where academic inquiry, clinical practice, and innovation converge to address global health challenges.

Research at UCIMED began in the year 2000 within the Parasitology Department, thanks to the initiative of Dr. Misael Chinchilla. The Research Laboratory was inaugurated in 2015, encompassing areas for general work, cell culture, and molecular biology, among others.

We have established partnerships with UCR, UNA, CONICIT, Savegre Reserve, Las Pumas Rescue Center, La Marina Rescue Center, Marie Sklodowska Curie Research & Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE), and the company Speratum.

Currently we have over 80 publications in national and international recognized journals.

Our Medical Sciences Research Institute is a Contract Administration Organization (OAC) that carries out biomedical research with the greatest efficiency, adhering to the highest ethical and scientific standards.
